Get Ready to harmonize with Overtone Analytics

I came to this problem the way a musician does: by ear.

Spend enough time playing or studying music and you learn that meaning lives in intervals as much as notes. A semitone— the smallest step in Western music — is the difference between a major third and a minor third, between a phrase that resolves and one that stays unsettled. It's a tiny move on the page. It's everything to the ear. An overtone — the harmonics that ring above a note's fundamental frequency — doesn't change what note is being played, but it changes how that note is heard: warmer, brighter, or out of balance with everything around it.

Scientific communication works the same way, and most people never notice it happening.

The finding is the fundamental — the data, the result, the thing that's actually true. Everything built on top of it is overtone: the framing in an abstract, the confidence in a grant renewal, the certainty in a press release, the hedge that quietly disappears somewhere between the lab notebook and the pitch deck. None of it changes the underlying note. But by the time a discovery reaches a funder, a journalist, or an investor, the overtones can drift so far from the fundamental that no one downstream is quite hearing what the scientist heard at the bench.

And often it isn't even a whole step. It's a semitone. "May suggest" becomes "demonstrates." "Preliminary" quietly drops out of the sentence. "In a mouse model" becomes an afterthought instead of the headline. Each shift is small enough to defend on its own. Stacked across a translational pipeline — bench to publication to clinical development to market — those semitones add up to a different piece of music than the one that started it.

Overtone Analytics exists to listen for that difference: to quantify how scientific language shifts as a discovery moves toward the clinic and the market, and to understand when that shift is a healthy part of communicating science to a wider audience — and when it's drift that has started to outrun the evidence.

We're an early-stage research and technology venture, not a finished product. We're looking for scientists, communicators, and collaborators who hear this the way we do.
